Can Gio Bridge, Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, pedestrian bridge across Saigon River with a total investment of more than 18,000 billion VND are scheduled to start construction in 2025 to help increase connectivity and remove infrastructure bottlenecks in many areas in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Can Gio Bridge project has a total capital of more than 11,000 billion VND and is proposed to be invested in the form of BOT (build – operate – transfer).
Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed that the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee balance capital of about 5,246 billion VND to participate in project investment (equivalent to nearly 50% of the total investment), with the remaining capital mobilized by investors.
According to the proposal of the Department of Transport, the starting point of Can Gio bridge is at Road 15B (Nha Be district), about 500 m north of Muong Ngang canal. Then the bridge crosses Nguyen Binh street and then crosses Soai Rap river. When entering Can Gio district, the bridge will connect to Rung Sac road at a location about 2.1km south of Binh Khanh ferry.
Can Gio Bridge has a total length of 7.3km (of which Can Gio bridge is nearly 3km long, the access road is more than 4.3km long), 6 lanes (4 motorized lanes, 2 rudimentary lanes), speed 60 km/h.
The bridge is built in the form of a cable stay with the main span length of the bridge in the middle of the river bed being 350m, placed on two 150m high bridge piers. Can Gio Bridge will have a clear clearance of 55m (equivalent to Binh Khanh Bridge of the Ben Luc – Long Thanh expressway project) – the highest in Vietnam at the present time.
The project will be submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council to approve the investment policy in 2024, start construction in 2025, and be completed in 2028. At that time, Can Gio bridge will usurp Phu My bridge (connecting Thu Duc city and District 7) or Binh Khanh bridge. , becoming the largest cable-stayed bridge in Ho Chi Minh City.
At the same time, Can Gio bridge will replace Binh Khanh ferry connecting the South of Ho Chi Minh City with Can Gio district, meeting traffic needs in the area. Thereby, creating conditions to promote and develop two projects in Can Gio: Can Gio International Transshipment Port and Can Gio Beach Tourism Urban Area.
Thu Thiem Bridge 4
Thu Thiem 4 Bridge has a total investment of about 6,030 billion VND, invested in the form of BOT. This project has also just been proposed by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee to balance the investment capital of about 2,826 billion VND (equivalent to about 50% of the total investment).
According to the proposal, the total length of Thu Thiem 4 bridge is about 2.16km (of which the bridge part is longer than 1.6km) with 6 lanes. The bridge can raise and lower the main span with a maximum clearance of 45m. This type of bridge design is considered unprecedented in Vietnam by the Department of Transport, helping large ships easily run on the Saigon River into the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
The project starts from the section before the intersection of Tan Thuan 2 – Nguyen Van Linh bridge, goes along Nguyen Van Linh street, turns left at Huynh Tan Phat intersection to connect to Luu Trong Lu street (District 7). The bridge continues to cut through Tan Thuan port area, across the Saigon River connecting Thu Thiem Urban Area at the intersection of North-South axis and Bui Thien Ngo street.
The project will be submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Council for approval of the investment policy this year, starting in 2025 and completing in 2028.
When completed, Thu Thiem 4 Bridge will not only promote the development of Thu Thiem New Urban Area but also shorten the travel time from Thu Duc City and Binh Thanh District to Districts 7, 8, Nha Be, and Binh Chanh. The project also helps reduce congestion around Ben Nghe port, Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone, Huynh Tan Phat street in District 7.
Pedestrian bridge over Saigon River
The pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River connecting District 1 and Thu Duc City has a total investment of more than 1,000 billion VND.
The bridge is 500m long, located between Ba Son bridge and the tunnel across the Saigon River. The bridgehead on the District 1 side is located in the Bach Dang Port Park area and closest to Nguyen Hue walking street. Thu Duc City’s side is arranged at the Riverbank Park and outside the boundary of zone A, south of the Central Square in Thu Thiem New Urban Area.
According to the architectural design plan of the pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River chosen by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, the bridge will have the image of nipa palm leaves – a familiar image of the South.
The project is designed to resist level 7 earthquakes, wind gusts, fluctuations when crowded with people… In addition to serving pedestrians, the bridge also has lanes for bicycles and people with disabilities. The bridge is also designed for ambulances in emergencies.
In early December 2023, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport signed a project sponsorship agreement. Accordingly, the enterprise will fund the entire cost of project construction according to the policies, planning, and design plans approved by the city.
The Department of Transport said it is completing the steps to submit the project’s investment policy for approval. Ho Chi Minh City aims to start construction of a pedestrian bridge across the Saigon River on April 30, 2025 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and reunification of the country.
